Women's share of the names left off
Eleven states and union territories published the names left off their draft rolls by sex, or published the roll by sex before and after so that the difference can be counted. For each one the chart sets women's share of the names left off beside their share of the roll before the revision. If the revision had fallen on women and men alike, the two dots would sit on top of each other.
Per 100 women and per 100 men
The same counts as rates. Each figure is the number of names left off for every 100 women, or every 100 men, on the roll before the revision.
Names left off per 100 women and per 100 men on the roll
District by district
Four states published enough by sex to follow the pattern below the state. Each dot is a district, placed at women's share of its count less their share of its roll. A dot to the right of zero is a district where women made up more of those removed than of the electors. The four counts are different, so each state is read on its own.
Women's share of the count less their share of the roll, by district, in points
After the draft
Between the draft and the final roll, electors could ask to be added back with Form 6, and objections could take more names off. Three states published both directions by sex.
Women's share of the draft roll, of the names added after it and of the names removed after it, per cent
Bihar, set against death and marriage records
Bihar is the one state whose deletion lists were counted name by name, so it is the one state where the reasons written against women's names can be set against outside records.
Women's share in Bihar, expected and on the lists, per cent
The lists record what happened to each entry and nothing about why. A woman who married and moved, a woman who went to work in another state, and a woman who was at her parents' house on the day the officer called can all end up with the same entry. So this page shows where and by how much women were removed more than men, and it does not say why.
